
The Tri-M® Music Honor Society is an international program dedicated to the recognition of exceptional music students that meet the music, academic, leadership, and character criteria asked of every Tri-M member. Tri-M is a program of the National Association for Music Education, which is the largest arts education association in the world.
Tri-M® Student Membership Information
MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Music Participation
Candidates must be enrolled in a school-sponsored music ensemble and/or class for at least one semester of the current school year.
Academic Achievement
Candidates must have maintained at least a 90% average grade or equivalent in music for the previous semester or most recent music class, with at least a cumulative 2.8 GPA overall.
Leadership
Leadership roles in both school and community may be considered as long as they can be verified with the music directors.
Service
Service activities include any music actions undertaken by the student that are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or material compensation to the individual performing the service. These hours can also count toward PCHS Graduation requirements and NHS Service requirements. Students are required to have 10 hours of music service a year to maintain membership
Character
Character is a person who demonstrates respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Students are expected to maintain the highest level of character in their ensembles, classrooms and community. Students that do not demonstrate these characteristics may be dismissed from the organization at the discretion of the chapter advisors.
Performance
All members of the organization are required to do a student led performance once a year. Students may perform a solo, a small ensemble piece, or a research project. Performances and presentations of research will take place at curricular concerts.
AWARDS/RECOGNITION
Membership
All members of the organization will receive a Tri-M pin and certificate of acceptance.
Performance Honor
Students that perform a solo, small ensemble piece, or a presentation for every semester of membership will receive cords for graduation.
Service Honor
Students that complete 50 hours of music service will be awarded a Tri-M medal with ribbon for graduation to display the students’ commitment to service.
Master Musician
One student a year will be selected by the advisors for this honor. Students that were in a music ensemble/class, participated in an extra-curricular ensemble and maintained the highest academic standards in non-music classes for all 8 semesters of their high school career are eligible. This student will be awarded the Tri-M Honors Stole for graduation.
